Having recently celebrated the 72nd day of Indian independence, I began to ponder over all that has been achieved in these 71 years. It makes me feel really proud about my country and with a great sense of gratitude I owe all that I enjoy today to those who sacrificed their lives to make this land free from colonialism and also to those who helped in rebuilding the nation to make it what it is today. As I was relishing the good aspects of freedom and the numerous developments that my country has made, my cousin who was doubtful about taking part in an inter college competition came to me for an advice on the same. She was asking me about the need of participating in such events and what use are they to anyone. It was then I realized something very important and I felt the immediate need to share it on the occasion of 72nd year of Indian independence. Participation is something which most of us are not comfortable with. I know many of my friends at school and college who were reluctant to participate any competitions conducted by the respective institutions. There were times when I was also one among them. Later it was my mother who kicked me out of my comfort zone and made me realize the importance of participation. The motive of conducting competitions at schools and colleges is not to increase the competitive spirit among the candidates but to help them learn responsibility,to make them come out of inertia and thus build a nation whose people are responsible.
We know that the Governments come up with many useful schemes and policies to help the countries grow. Yet, we see many of them failing because of lack of participation of the people for whom those policies are meant. Whereas, in those countries where people actively take part, there the scope of development is high and eventually they turn out to be developed countries.
For instance, if we see someone bleeding on the road we must be in a position to do some first aid or admit them in hospital immediately. Then, when we see someone around us trying to bribe an officer, then we must be able to stop him instead of complaining later that the country has become corrupt and government is not taking any measure. If we see a woman being assaulted, we must be in a position to drive the beasts away instead of waiting for her dignity to be lost. In highly populated countries like India its not at all tough.I strongly feel that the spirit of participation comes from childhood by taking part in competitions at schools, colleges and where ever they are being held.
Remember, if you run then only there is a possibility of getting a cup and enjoying the fruits of victory. If you give some work to your hands and mouth, only then can you eat food. Similarly, unless you participate, you cannot really enjoy the freedom. So arise, awake and participate.
